Fishery protection by the Royal Navy

Synopsis

In this lesson students look at the imposition of restrictions on fishing, as an example of sustainable development. Students are charged with defining sustainable development, and study a number of examples thereof, including; brownfield sites, forest farming, cycle tracks, improved public transport, use of alternative energy sources and organic farming, before focusing on fishing restrictions as a case study.

  • Show an understanding of the interdependent relationship between people and their environments.
  • Understand that there is a relationship between population and resources.
Average ability students will:
  • Have a good understanding of what sustainable development is, and are able to offer a definition with a supporting rationale.
  • Show a good understanding of the interdependent relationship between people and their environments and an awareness of attempts to manage environments.
  • Understand that there is a relationship between population and resources and that variation in one will impact on the other.
Higher ability students will:
  • Have an excellent understanding of what sustainable development is, and are able to offer an accurate definition with a clear rationale.
  • Demonstrate an excellent understanding of the complex relationship between people and their environments, citing examples to support this, and showing ability to explain in detail why attempts are made to manage environments.
  • Display a keen understanding of the interrelationship between population and resources. Including population change and economic development.
