Access & Recreation

Introduction

Welcome to the Ministry of Defence Access and Recreation Web Pages

The scenic qualities of the defence estate, its rich heritage and comparatively remote nature have created a valuable recreational facility that the public may use and enjoy. It is a particularly important resource for many local communities. In addition to walkers, the estate is used on a formal and informal basis by the public for horse riding, cycling and other recreational activities.

The MOD's aims and detailed objectives relating to access and recreation are set out in In Trust & On Trust - The Strategy for the Defence Estate. The Strategy states that MOD will meet its declared presumption in favour of safe public enjoyment of its estate wherever this is compatible with operational and military training uses, public safety, security, conservation and the interests of its tenants.

Safe public enjoyment of the access opportunities provided across the defence estate requires responsible behaviour of both MOD, as estate managers and users, and the general public as visitors.

  • Please observe all signs and do not trespass.
  • Please respect the need for servicemen to train for operations.
  • Respect the countryside and follow the relevant codes in England, Wales and Scotland.
