Projects overview

Brief descriptions of our projects - in development and in production - can be found below:

Imagine being able to watch an artist at work, observing their creations and learning from their skills. ArtisanCam will pilot a series of virtual artists residencies, linking artists and craftspeople working in their studios, with groups of people of all ages in schools and in cultural settings. Websites using images, text, sound, animation, video conferencing and live web casts will link the groups.

City Heritage Guides

City Heritage Guides pull together accessible, inclusive and inspiring heritage content for a local, national and international audience. The Guides present up-to-date information about museums, galleries and heritage brought to life using real experiences, opinions and creative content written by city communities, museum staff and journalists.

Every Object Tells A Story

Everyone has a particular object to which they attach a special meaning or story. Every Object Tells A Story is a participative website that allows people to explore the meanings behind collections of objects, create their own stories and share their own interpretations and objects online.

Headline History

Headline History is a series of virtual newspapers from specific periods in history, from the Roman Gazette to the Victorian Times, to match areas of the National Curriculum.

Icons (working title)

Icons will grow over time into a virtual collection of hundreds of England's cultural icons from Stonehenge to the Angel of the North via Magna Carta and the Double-Decker Bus. Easy to navigate and with deep content from a wealth of contributing partners, Icons will represent a delightful experience for users and a creative collaboration between cultural institutions. Visitors to the virtual collection will be able to participate in a variety of engaging activities, both on- and off-line, including a vibrant education programme.

MadforArts

MadforArts is a unique project that will give a voice to some of the most marginalised people in society. The project will use new technologies and a structured support system to encourage views on art from a mental health user and survivor perspective. A new website will be central to the project. The main element of the website will be a gallery containing mental health users' well-produced views and critiques of particular works of art, music, sculpture and architecture. The best 12 contributions to the site will be made into films and featured on The Community Channel; five of those will also be shown on Channel Five.

Origination

This project has been developed with Channel 4 to demonstrate the contribution of incoming cultures to England – explored through the objects of its museums, galleries and individuals. Black, Asian, Irish and Polish communities will be among the groups reached out to.

Plant Cultures

Plant Cultures will create a website that gathers together a wide range of information about plants from South Asia. Kew Gardens and a number of museums will work with local communities to create the content of this website using a range of digital technologies.

Playground Fun

Playground Fun captures traditional and modern playground and street games and teaches them to a whole new generation. More than simply an online archive, it allows children to make up their own games and to create variations of existing ones. At the same time, it encourages children to find out more about the games older generations played in their childhoods and to discover games from other cultures.

Primary Film Online

Primary Film Online will research, develop and build a website that engages children creatively with the moving image.

Stagework

Stagework gets right behind the scenes to show the creative processes that produce exciting theatre. The website explores how theatre in performance can tackle important issues about individuals and society. It builds a set of compelling resources for people interested in teaching or learning about theatre and for those interested in a career in the creative industries.

SoundWorlds

SoundWorlds opens up new opportunities for discovering, exploring and creating music. From the project website or CD-Rom, you can navigate deep into musical worlds, stepping into the music itself to hear how it comes together, is inspired, built and evolves. You can interact with real sounds and musicians, learning how to make music yourself, forging connections between different cultures and branching out into new kinds of music.

The Dark

The Dark is an interactive virtual world that challenges how we perceive the real world. Three-dimensional music and ghostly presences inhabit a haunted soundscape. Explore and
interact with virtual ghosts from our past, hear their stories
and solve their mysteries - using only your ears and your imagination.

Web Design Challenge

The Web Design Challenge is a new ICT (Information and Communication Technology) design competition for KS3 pupils. It offers them a unique opportunity to develop their ICT, creativity, literacy and design skills, as well as their knowledge and understanding of key agendas within the citizenship curriculum.

WebPlayUK

WebPlayUK is an internet-based project that enables primary school children from rural and urban areas to work with a professional theatre company to create, produce and perform short plays. The plays are then uploaded onto a specially created website.

World War II Remembered

Culture Online is commissioning a joint project with the BBC and Age Concern aimed at encouraging old people to take advantage of new technology, by providing access, encouragement and support in using computers and the internet. The project complements the ongoing work of Age Concern, and has as its focus the major BBC initiative commemorating the 60th anniversary of D-Day -The People's War.
