Mike was an award-winning programme maker at the BBC, beginning his career as a presenter and producer in Local Radio before moving to Network Radio where he specialised in arts, features and science programmes. He was Chief Producer of Radio 4's Kaleidoscope, founding Editor of Radio 3's Nightwaves and winner of the BP Arts Journalism Award. On moving to television, he produced BBC2's The Late Show arts magazine.
As Commissioning Executive for the BBC's Education for Adults department he commissioned a huge range of TV and radio output and led high-profile, targeted social action campaigns including Student Choice, which won three consecutive RTS awards. He specialised in history programming and was director of the BBC's History 2000 project, which included popular landmarks, such as Simon Schama's History of Britain, complementary activities in over 1,500 museums and the launch of the acclaimed BBC History website. He was also co-director of Gene Stories, a big initiative to promote the public understanding of Genetics, again involving integrated broadcasts, websites and outreach activities.
Mike has continued to act as executive producer on a number of BBC series and is a consultant for an interactive BBC training module on Editorial Policy. He has been working on the development of a national strategy for educating healthcare professionals in genetics with the Public Health Genetics Unit in Cambridge.
