Funding projects

Our current commissioning round has now closed although we would be interested in hearing from organisations with innovative ideas that could be considered in future rounds.

When submitting ideas, please be aware that Culture Online does not fund the following:

Activities that are not related to the arts or cultural heritage

Activities that do not make use of new technology or existing technology in novel ways

Activities that provide no potential benefit to the public, either in the short- or long-term

Activities, products or events that will not be free to the public at the point of access

Goods or services that have been bought or ordered before contracts have been exchanged and signed

Activities that have already taken place

Activities, equipment or events that duplicate what already exists

Costs that are already covered by other funding

Ongoing overheads (including overheads related to equipment or buildings, such as insurance and maintenance costs)

Activities that would result in an unfair competitive advantage for any one commercial organisation

Activities or events mainly taking place outside England; the project’s primary target audience must be located mainly in England

We would not expect organisations in receipt of regular public funding to charge a production fee for their time, although funding is available to cover salaries for additional staff that need to be recruited to deliver the project

Partnership funding

Culture Online will consider entering into co-funding agreements

Arts and cultural heritage

  • Craft and design (for example, glass, ceramics, bookbinding, engineering and architecture)
  • Literature
  • Public understanding of science

Duplication of funding

Organisations receiving other sources of public funding may be required to demonstrate that they are not already being funded for the activity for which they are applying to Culture Online.
