The increasing productivity of tourism businesses is a vital contribution to our wider objective of increasing UK productivity as a whole.
DCMS is the Government department with policy responsibility for sponsoring the inbound and domestic tourism industry. We have a proactive tourism industry sponsorship agenda and works hard in partnership with the sector to develop conditions that are right for it to flourish and increase its productivity.
By "sponsorship", we mean the way we engage and form relationships with stakeholders across the domestic tourism and hospitality sector, acts as an advocate for tourism in order to increase awareness of its potential, and represents its interests across all Government departments and the regions.
Since the tourism sector is characterised by a very large proportion of small and medium sized enterprises, an important part of our work also focuses on increasing productivity across the small tourism business sector by gaining a better understanding of the issues affecting it, and then determining what opportunities exist for DCMS intervention.
We are committed to building on and improving our sponsorship of the tourism industry. We aim to improve our understanding of the sector and the impact of Government policy decisions on the industry's performance.
We also intend to continue to refine our advocacy role for tourism across Whitehall and to raise the industry's profile in other Government departments on a range of issues affecting the sector including regulation, fiscal and other policy issues.
We will also continue to:
- Work in co-operation with the devolved administrations and the Northern Ireland Office to encourage a common approach to policy and delivery
- Maintain our work with the Greater London Authority to ensure the unique role of the capital as a gateway is recognised
- Work with the Regional Development Agencies who have strategic responsibility for tourism in the regions
- Support and encourage local authorities in their tourism promotional work
