"Heritage" can be defined as properties and artefacts of cultural importance handed down from the past.

We are responsible for conserving our national heritage for present and future generations, and ensuring that the public can experience and enjoy it.

This section of our site explains our different responsibilities:

English Heritage advise us on all matters concerning the conservation of our national heritage
Heritage Open Days provide the public with opportunities to visit and enjoy sites that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission
The Heritage Protection Review is our ongoing programme to reform and improve the system of heritage protection
World Heritage Sites are places recognized by UNESCO as being of “outstanding universal value”. The UK currently has 28 World Heritage Sites
Stonehenge is one such World Heritage Site, and there are big plans for its renovation and improvement
The National Heritage Memorial Fund and The Heritage Lottery Fund provide monies to aid heritage protection and conservation
