Department for Culture Media and Sport
skills & workforce development
We are committed to ensuring an adequate skills supply for the industries which we sponsor.
We have three broad areas of interest in the field of post-16 education:
Supply
We support the work of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to:
- raise standards in formal post-16 education and training
- make sure that all cultural or artistic subjects, and all vocational courses for the cultural, sporting, leisure, hospitality or creative industries, are of the highest possible quality.
We would like to see Centres of Vocational Excellence (COVEs) in DCMS-related subjects: arts, media, sport and hospitality/tourism and craft skills.
Demand
We work closely with our sponsored bodies, the Department for Children, Schools and Families and employers to make sure all our sectors are covered by Sector Skills Councils. These:
- identify the skills needs of the sectors
- develop and deliver national standards, vocational qualifications and workforce development plans to address skills needs.
Employers need to be committed to training and development, so that skill levels, productivity and performance can improve within DCMS's industries.
Engagement
Our sectors can assist providers to deliver high quality education and training. Broadcasters can support formal and informal learning. Museums, libraries, galleries, archives, arts organisations and the built and historic environments are all educational resources, which provide learning opportunities to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Visit our What we do pages for more information on our work within these sectors.
