evidence and research

Evidence and Research for the creative industries is crucial in understanding how to develop policy to support their growth and enhance their productivity. Below are some of the key research reports conducted by DCMS and external organisations.

The programme of research is ongoing and will be looking at some key issues including reviewing the framework for measuring the creative industries, innovation and spillovers in the creative industries.

Each year, DCMS publishes an update of their statistical bulletin on the Creative Industries. This contains the latest economic estimates on gross value added, exports, employment and numbers of businesses within the creative industries.

DCMS also produces and commissions evidence based research into other aspects of the creative industries.

Two key papers are:

  1. Creative Economy Programme: a summary of projects commissioned 2006/7 - a summary on a series of research papers published in August 2007. It includes a summary of the Frontier Economics’ projects above as well as a DCMS project on productivity drivers in the Creative Industries.

  2. Frontier Economics Statistical Analysis PDF (836kb) - in this paper, Frontier looked at developing a framework for measuring the creative industries and sets out a proposed model for doing this.

This is part of ongoing development work that DCMS is undertaking to review the current framework for measuring the creative industries. Therefore if the model presented by Frontier in this report is used in any research work it must be referenced as a proposed model and not a DCMS endorsed model.

Further information on our review into measuring the creative industries will be published here in the coming months.

In addition to their work on a statistical framework for the Creative Industries, Frontier also produced a series of papers during 2007 on different areas of analysis including  spillovers, growth and international demand. These can be accessed by the links on the side of the page.
