design
Design is an important part of the economy; the design industry has an annual turnover of £11.6 billion and employs 185,000 people in the UK.
We are working with the Design Council to highlight the importance of design to the UK's success as a leading innovation hub and creative economy.
The Design Council has been integral to our Creative Economy Programme and is represented at every level of the programme from the high-level steering group down.
We share responsibility for sponsorship of the Design Council with the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).
BERR continue to be responsible to Parliament for finances relating to the Design Council (due to their position as sole Grant in Aid funder of the Council) but Ministerial appointments are jointly approved by DCMS and BERR Ministers. DCMS officials attend Design Council meetings with our BERR counterparts.
