advertising regulation

Advertising in the UK is strictly controlled through a system of co-regulation and self-regulation.

The Office of Communications (Ofcom) are ultimately responsible for setting broadcast standards in advertising and the sponsorship of programmes.  However, most aspects of the day to day running of the system are dealt with by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). The ASA ensures all advertising, wherever it appears, meets the high standards laid down in the advertising codes

Non-broadcast advertising is controlled by industry self regulation, administered and enforced by the ASA.

This regulatory system is independent of Government.
