The collection of alcohol, entertainment and late-night refreshment licensing statistics is the responsibility of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The first comprehensive data collection exercise under the new licensing arrangements took place in 2007. The latest release relates to the number of licences in force at 31st March 2009 and the activity in the preceding 12 month period (1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009). The statistics cover England and Wales. More information on the bulletin, which was published on 30 October 2008, can be found online.
The Department previously published data relating to alcohol licensing under the old licensing legislation. The latest release and all previous publications can be accessed from the alcohol & entertainment licensing statistics page within the Research and Statistics section on this website.
Prior to the 2007, data collection the Department published an interim fact sheet on 23 November 2006. These are broad estimates only, based on a relatively small sample of Licensing Authorities, and the new statistical bulletin should now provides more authoritative figures.
