sports science and medicine

There are number of key sports medicine and science initiatives that support our top sportsmen and women, and UK sport as a whole.

UK Sports Institutes (UKSI)
The UK Sports Institute is the name given to a network of centres and a central team of experts that supports the UK’s top sportsmen and women.

It is made up of four Home Country Sports Institutes in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland along with a central services team, which is part of UK Sport, based in London.

The four Sports Institutes of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland provide world class facilities to elite athletes. They provide state of the art facilities and services for sports science and medicine.

National Sports Medicine Institute (NSMI)
The work of NSMI is funded by DCMS through UK Sport and Sport England.

NSMI promotes good medical practice in the treatment of athletes at all levels, including adequate preparation for events and the importance of a sound diet for optimum health and performance.

They have developed RESCU - the Register of Exercise and Sports Care UK, a database which provides details of top sports medical and care practitioners/ facilities in the UK.

British Olympic Medical Centre (BOMC)
BOMC is a partnership between the British Olympic Association and the English Institute of Sport. It provides a holistic, multi-disciplinary service to Olympic Governing bodies, their coaches and to athletes, which includes:

  • Residential rehabilitation
  • Outpatient sports medicine and physiotherapy services
  • Squad-based sports physiology
  • Research developments

The BOMC provides short-term and on-going support to athletes from a wide range of sports.
