sporting facilities

Creating more first class facilities is essential if we are to increase participation in sport. By the end of 2006, along with the National Lottery distributing bodies, we will have committed over £1 billion to the development of over 4,000 new or refurbished public sports facilities.

What’s been accomplished so far:

  • Active England

£108.5 million has been invested in the development of new and modernised sports facilities, some co-located  with other services such as Primary Care trusts

  • New Opportunities for PE and Sport

£750 million (UK figure) to develop new and refurbished community sports facilities in schools

  • New Opportunities Fund Playing Fields and Green Spaces

Over £27 million invested for the improvement of playing fields and community green spaces

  • Community Club Development Programme

£100 million to help amateur sports clubs develop the quality of their facilities to help widen access and increase participation.

  • Active Places Database

Over £4.5 million has been spent developing the Active Places database, a searchable website with records of all local sports facilities in England.
