We work with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to increase the take-up of sporting opportunities by 5 to 16 year-olds.
By 2008, we hope to engage 75 percent of children in each School Partnership in two hours of high quality PE and school sport per week, within and beyond the curriculum.
By 2010 our ambition is to offer all children at least four hours of sport made up of at least two hours of high quality PE within the curriculum and at least an additional two to three hours out of school, delivered by a range of school, community and club providers.
We are working on a number of initiatives to reach this aim:
Club Links
This programme links schools with local sports clubs and is being delivered through the National Governing Bodies of 22 sports.
Step into Sport
A joint initiative with the Department for Children, Schools and Families – it is one of the eight strands in the national School Sports Strategy.
Step into Sport provides sports leadership and volunteering opportunities for young people aged 14 – 19 years.
Sport kitemarks for schools
Following consultation on proposals to introduce changes to Sports Kitemarks, two key changes have been agreed:
- Kitemarks will in future reward delivery of the national PE, School Sports and Club Links strategy. They will therefore only be open to schools that are in a Schools Sport Partnership
- Kitemarks will be awarded annually, automatically though the national school sport survey, so there will be no need to complete a separate application form.
The survey will take place during the summer term, with awards being announced in the autumn term.
