Bidding to host sporting events gives the UK the potential to boost the development of sport, win medals and international success and improve the image and influence of UK sport worldwide.

 

DCMS are committed to supporting viable bids to host major and "mega" events in the UK, such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup.

Following the enormous success of the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester 2002, London will host the 2012 OIympic Games
 
The UK already successfully hosts a number of key major sporting events every year, including Wimbledon Tennis Championships, British Grand Prix and the cricket Test Series.

The Government-funded body, UK Sport, plays a key role in working with the sports National Governing Bodies on some major sporting events, such as the successful World Indoor Athletic Championships held in Birmingham in March 2003.
