sport

DCMS provides significant funding for sports provision, improving the quantity and quality of sporting opportunities at every level, from the playground to the podium.

Our aim is to encourage wider participation in sport, helping to create a more active nation and improve performance.

Our vision is that the UK be re-established as a powerhouse in the sporting world.
What we’re doing:

  • Sport England: We fund Sport England to promote and invest in grassroots and community sport.
  • UK Sport: We support UK Sport in helping the UK towards world class success
  • Equality in sport: By 2008, we aim to have increased participation by under-represented groups in sport by three percent.
  • Community sport: Promoting sport at grassroots level is vital to our vision. Find out what funding is available for community sport.
  • Funding sources for talented athletes: If you’re talented, we can point you towards invaluable funds.
  • Professional sport: We support professional sports in the UK and represent their interests in government
  • Sports facilities:  Along with the National Lottery distributing bodies we have committed over £1 billion to the development of sports facilities. In addition, we are supporting the new Wembley Stadium project.
  • World class competitors: We’re raising the profile of UK sport by identifying and supporting sporting talent
