neighbourhood renewal

The aim of neighbourhood renewal is to narrow the gap between deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of the country.

A New Commitment to Neighbourhood Renewal: A National Strategy Action Plan, was launched by the Prime Minister on 15 January 2001.

DCMS has fully met the five key commitments it made in the National Strategy. These were around:

As well as improving quality of life in our most deprived areas, DCMS sectors can work with other public and voluntary agencies seeking to address issues of neighbourhood renewal. For example, arts, sport and play can be vehicles for health promotion and crime reduction; libraries, museums, arts and sport can contribute to education; parks, sport, arts and tourism can play a role in aspects of urban regeneration.

We are now working to maximise further the contribution of our sectors to the neighbourhood renewal agenda.
