Although there is no single agreed definition, “media literacy” has parallels with traditional literacy; the ability to read and write. Put simply, media literacy is the ability to read and write audiovisual information – to use a range of media and be able to understand the information received.
At a higher level, media literacy includes more complex critical thinking skills such as questioning, analysing and evaluating that information.
The Communications Act 2003 places new responsibilities on the regulator, Ofcom, to promote media literacy.
Ofcom have already produced a series of reports examining the views of adults generally, of adults from minority ethnic groups, older people, children, disabled people, and people across the nations and regions.
