Why has the license fee kept increasing?

The Secretary of State announced a six-year licence fee settlement on 18 January 2007, with the first increase of the settlement implemented from 1 April 2007.

The level and structure of funding announced will allow the BBC to deliver four key objectives:

  1. To fund the BBC to implement the vision of the BBC Charter Review White Paper and the new Charter and Agreement, maintaining relevance and impact in a period of rapid change
  2. To support digital switchover, including funding and delivery of the targeted help scheme
  3. To enable the BBC to widen the geographical spread of its production facilities, including by the move of significant production to the North West of England
  4. To maximise value for money to the licence fee payer
