There are several ways to get digital television but availability depends on where you live.
Some locations will not be able to receive digital television through an aerial until digital switchover. You can check the options available to you by entering your post code in the digital television post checker.
These are the choices most widely available:
Digital terrestrial television (television through an aerial)
You can get a free television service from Freeview and the option of additional services from Top Up TV.
You will need to ask your retailer to check your postcode to see if you are in a digital terrestrial television coverage area, or check the digital television post checker. You may need a new aerial to receive all the services. Ask your retailer or local aerial installer for advice.
DTT is also available through BT Vision’s package of services.
Digital Satellite
Subscription-based services are available from Sky and a free digital satellite service is also available from Sky.
Digital cable
You can get subscription based services from Virgin Media (and regionally) Wight Cable or Smallworld. You will need to ask your cable operator or retailer to see if you are in a cable coverage area.
Broadband/DSL
In a limited number of areas in the UK, you can get digital television through DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technologies based on telephony communications networks. Tiscali TV is available in areas of London and Stevenage.
