space for sport and arts

What is Space for Sports and Arts?
The highly successful Space for Sports and Arts scheme (SSArts) has provided new facilities and modernised facilities for sports and arts in primary schools in deprived areas across the UK.

This has given pupils and the wider community more opportunities to get involved in arts based and sporting activities than ever before; helping improve educational standards, build communities and ensure social inclusion.

SSArts has been administered by Sports England on behalf of the DCMS and the other partners; the Department for Education and Skills, the Big Lottery fund and Arts Council England.

Key achievements
The programme has been a huge success:

  • £134 million was granted towards the scheme
  • 269 new or refurbished facilities were set up, including community sports facilities, multi arts facilities and theatres.
  • In addition to capital grants, revenue funding has helped promote use of the facilities locally
