What is the Music Manifesto?
The Music Manifesto is a campaign for improvement in music education. It is about creating more music for more people.
The Music Manifesto was developed by the DCMS and Department for Education and Skills in collaboration with a sixty-strong consortium of music organisations, educators, musicians and representatives from the music industry.
It offers a vision and set of priorities for the next three to five years, focusing on children and young people to develop music education and ensure young people experience a broad range of musical experiences.
It sets the agenda for music education but is more than a one-off statement; the Music Manifesto website enables individuals and organisations to sign up to the vision, make pledges of contribution and demonstrate how they are working towards fulfilling the Music Manifesto aims.
Why is it important?
Music plays a prominent part in young people’s lives, both in and out of school, from an early age. Music enriches, inspires and has a unique contribution to make to the education and development of all children.
The aims of the Music Manifesto
The shared aims laid out in the Manifesto are:
- To provide every young person with first access to a range of music experiences
- To provide more opportunities for young people to deepen and broaden their musical interests and skills
- To identify and nurture our most talented young musicians
- To develop a world class workforce in music education
- To improve the support structure for young peoples’ music making
