Who does the Government Olympic Executive (GOE) work with?     

DCMS also works closely with the following stakeholders:

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG)
Responsible for the planning and staging of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)
Responsible for ensuring delivery of the new venues and infrastructure for the London Games and the legacy programmes that will follow.

 

 

London Development Agency (LDA)
Responsible for the sustainable economic growth of London as host city.

 

 


British Olympic Association (BOA)
Responsible for the selection, preparation, management and performance of Team GB at the Games.

 

 

Paralympics GB
Responsible for leading and preparing Britain’s Paralympics team into the Games.

 

 

Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority (GLA)
Responsible for co-ordinating the work to capture the sustainable legacy and benefits from the 2012 Games in London

What does the Minister do?     

Rt Hon Tessa JowellRt Hon Tessa Jowell, the Minister for the Olympics and Paralympics is responsible for the Government's overall Programme and legacy plans. As such, the Minister co-chairs (with the Mayor of London) the Olympic Board and exercises statutory and other functions with respect to the stakeholders.

What is The Olympic Board?      

The Olympic Board encompasses the Olympics Minister, the Mayor of London, and the chairs of BOA and LOCOG.
The Board provides oversight, strategic coordination and monitoring of the total London Games project, ensuring the delivery of the commitments made to the International Olympic Committee, and a sustainable legacy from the staging of the Games.

What is the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006?      

The London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 was introduced to Parliament on 14 July 2005 and received Royal Assent less than nine months later, on March 30 2006.

The Act:

  • Set up the Olympic Delivery Authority, responsible for ensuring delivery of the new venues and infrastructure for the Games
  • Granted the Mayor of London Olympic-specific powers to enable him to fulfill his obligations under the Host City Contract
  • Ensures that we meet the commitments given in London's bid on how the Games, and the Olympic environment, will be managed, particularly in relation to advertising and marketing.

What are the Nations and Regions doing to maximise the opportunities presented by the Games?    

As part of their ongoing planning the Nations and Regions are considering how they communicate, consult with and engage wider communities.

What London 2012 Games events will take place outside of London?     

The football tournament will see games played in Glasgow, Cardiff, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and London. Sailing will be in Weymouth, rowing in Eton Dorney, canoeing in Broxbourne and mountain biking at Hadleigh Farm.

What locations are being considered to serve as pre-Games training camps for athletes for the Games?

Unfortunately, due to time pressures on the Minister’s diary, it is not possible for direct interviews to be arranged. Answers to most questions can be found on the London 2012 pages of the DCMS website or by visiting the sites of our partners and stakeholders, as listed above.

How can I get involved in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games?       

There are many ways for people to actively participate in the Games. The four-year Cultural Olympiad is already underway and comprises a range of activities and ceremonies across the UK.
