Since being awarded the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in July 2005, Government and other organisations have been busy planning and preparing.

- July: When London won the bid

2007
- October: Planning permission is secured for the Olympic Park. It is one of the biggest planning applications in European history

2008
- January: International Inspiration launched. A £9 million investment supporting sporting projects in developing nations
- May: Construction begins ahead of schedule on the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Village
- June: The Government launches its £140 million Free Swimming Programme to boost sport and fitness. The DCMS publishes its Legacy Action Plan for London 2012 (PDF)
- July: Construction begins ahead of schedule on the Aquatics Centre
BEIJING: Team GB wins 47 medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, finishing fourth in the medal table. Paralympics GB wins 102 medals at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, finishing second in the medal table. Read more about Team GB.
- August/September: The VISA London 2012 Party on the Mall takes place with 40,000 people and five million viewers. 5,000 schools sign up for the launch of 2012 Education Programme and celebrate Paralympic Handover. Cultural Olympiad launches with Open Weekend and 650 events across the UK. Young Ambassadors’ Programme is the first recipient of The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) Inspire mark
- November: 78 percent of site-wide preparation works are complete. Weymouth and Portland Harbour is the first venue to be completed, ahead of schedule and to budget. Money raised from dedicated lottery games reaches £375 million, halfway to our target of £750 million
- December: Sport England invests £480 million in National Governing Bodies
2009
- January: Halfway point between winning the bid and staging the Games
- February: The Olympic Park Legacy Company is launched
- July: Three years to go until London 2012 commences
