We are committed to helping our top athletes succeed in the 2012 Games and other future competitions. Some £164 million has been made available to assist in their preparations for the 2008 Beijing Games, and in the 2006 budget the Chancellor announced an extra £200 million of funding for elite sport in the run up to 2012.
Yet the Games are not just about top athletes; they will also provide the inspiration and facilities to increase sports participation at grassroots level, and to encourage everyone to lead healthier, more active lives.
After the Games, the UK will have a legacy of top-class sports facilities which will be accessible for future generations of recreational users and elitle athletes alike.
How many medals will Britain win in the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games?
We are aiming high: we want to reach 4th place in the medal table for the Olympic Games and 1st place for the Paralympic Games.
What sport facilities will be left behind after the 2012 Games?
A large stadium, an aquatic centre, a hockey facility, a velodrome, and a multi-sports arena will all remain in the Olympic Park in east London.
In addition, to help spread the benefits of the Games, other facilities will be dismantled and relocated around the UK and sports equipment used in the 2012 Games will be distributed to schools and sports clubs throughout the UK.
