The success of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will depend on the involvement of thousands of businesses of every size up and down the country.
The London 2012 project will be undertaking major procurement from mid-2007 right up to and beyond 2012. Contracts will be awarded by both the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games(LOCOG).
The ODA will let the majority of the contracts for the infrastructure, transport and construction of the Olympic Park from 2007 onwards. They have already let some early contracts, such as the contract to design the Olympic Park.
LOCOG will let most contracts for services to deliver and stage the Games, from sports equipment to catering. These contracts will be let from 2009 onwards.
In addition, the London Development Agency will let contracts enabling works such as demolition, remediation and bulk earthworks.
All contract opportunities will be posted on the London 2012 Business Centre website. Tenders for most contracts in relation to construction or transport requirements will also appear in the Official Journal of the European Union. They will also be advertised in key trade journals.
The 2012 Games have the potential to provide a sustainable boost to economic performance and market opportunity to UK businesses. This is not just about companies who will win Olympic and Paralympic contracts; it is also about leaving a legacy of fitter, innovative companies who can compete for all opportunities on a global stage.
It is vital that individual businesses consider now what the Games mean to them and what they need to do to get fit to supply, either directly or indirectly.

The Government is wholly committed to mobilising all its business support tools to help businesses prepare for the opportunites presented by the 2012 Games. In addition, the Government and LOCOG are exploring the potential for operating a Business Opportunities Network to give businesses across the UK, particularly small and medium size enterprises, the opportunity to engage with potential partners and compete successfully for Olympics-related work.
The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and partners are committed to working with companies of all sizes to help them get fit to supply the Games. Companies will be helped to indentify procurement opportunites and, through Business Links, they will have access to help in assessing their strengths and weaknesses and in improving their overall performance. Although not every business will win a contract to supply the Games, every company will benefit from the business support it receives to get "fit to supply", thus ensuring it is well placed to access contracts under the annual Government procurement spend of £125 billion.
Furthermore, the 2012 Games provide a unique opportunity for showcasing UK capability in new technologies such as low emission vehicles, intelligent transport systems and low carbon energy technologies. The DTI, through its innovation programmes, is working with LOCOG to develop a technology vision for the Games.
