Sports medicine and science The UK continues to develop sports medicine and science initiatives through a number of key organisations. This includes:-
- UK Sports Institute's(UKSI) - this is a network of world class facilities and services to elite athletes is based on the national sports institute centres in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and a network of nine regional centres in England (English Institute of Sport). Each Centre will provide state of the art sports science and medicine facilities.
- National Sports Medicine Institute (NSMI) - The government, through UK Sport and Sport England, continues to fund the work of NSMI. Established in 1992, NSMI promotes good medical practice in the treatment of athletes at all levels, including adequate preparation for events and the importance of a sound diet for optimum health and performance. An example of their recent work is the development of RESCU - the Register of Exercise and Sports Care:UK - a database which contains details of the top sports medical and care practitioners/facilities in the UK.
- British Olympic Medical Centre - the British Olympic Medical Centre (BOMC) is the British Olympic Association's Department of Sports Science and Sports Medicine. It was established in September 1987 and is based at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow. The Centre delivers its services to Olympic and aspiring Olympic athletes in a unique way. By using a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach the centre can deliver a planned and co-ordinated programme to Olympic Governing bodies, their coaches and athletes.
