TASS 2012 Scholarships
What are TASS 2012 Scholarships? TASS 2012 Scholarships are a new strand of the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). The programme runs alongside the parent TASS programme to help our medal hopefuls fast track to the World Class Performance Programme. Who is eligible for TASS 2012 Scholarships? The programme is primarily targeted at 12 to 18 year olds and will support around 100 young sportspeople that have the potential to be a medallist at future winter and summer Olympiads and international sporting competitions. In recognising that athletes in some sports typically reach their peak earlier (e.g. gymnastics) or later (e.g. equestrians) than the programme's standard age range, governing bodies are permitted to seek approval to nominate athletes within a discretionary age range of ideally between 10 and 20.
It is also a requirement of the programme that the athlete is eligible to compete as part of an England or Great Britain squad.

What support do TASS 2012 Scholars receive? Scholars will receive an award in the region of up to £10,000 for the provision of world class sporting services and support infrastructure. The award will be spent on a customised package of sporting services and support created by the athlete's governing body and verified by TASS National Management in conjunction with UK Sport or Sport England. Funding will go towards providing first class services like coaching, physiotherapy, sports science, nutritional advice and sports psychology. How are TASS 2012 Scholarship athletes identified? Most stars of the future are known by their national governing bodies and already receive support to develop in their sport, it is therefore these bodies that are in the best position to identify athletes that meet the criteria. The stages to the nomination process are as follows:
Stage 1 Governing bodies nominate athletes by completing a 2012 Athlete Registration form on behalf of the athlete. This provides TASS National Management with general information about the athlete to verify that they are eligible to be nominated for a 2012 scholarship. Stage 2 If the application passes stage one of the nomination process, governing bodies will be asked to complete an NGB 2012 Athlete Subjective Criteria form. This provides governing bodies with an opportunity to outline why the athlete should receive an award, propose how much the award should be and how it would enable an athlete to achieve their goals. Stage 3 TASS National Management will then calculate scores for each applicant based on the athletes current performance, their sport, the current support provided to the athlete and the governing body's support and infrastructure. This procedure is carried out in conjunction with Sport England and UK Sport. The top 150 athletes will have their application papers submitted to the 'TASS 2012 scholarship independent selection panel' for consideration. The selection panel is comprised of an independent chair, a representative from Sport England and a representative from UK Sport.

Who do I contact about applying for a TASS 2012 Scholarship Award? In the first instance, you should check that you, or the person you are nominating, meets the eligibility criteria in respect of age and sport. You should then approach your sport's national governing body. What else can you tell me about TASS 2012 Scholarships? TASS 2012 Scholarship awards are made for the period 1 August to 31 July. For the most part, awards are for a single year, but TASS 2012 Scholars can be nominated by their governing body for support to be continued in future years. Funding is provided to the service provider and not to the athlete. If it better suits the needs of the athlete, governing bodies can apply for an award for multiple years. As with the parent TASS programme, governing bodies monitor and regularly assess the performance of TASS 2012 scholars to ensure that they make full use of the services and facilities provided for them. Awards made in the first year of the programme? There have been 107 awards made so far in 2005-06. Of these, 46% have gone to women and 8% to disabled athletes. The value of awards ranges from £2,500 to £10,000. The table below outlines the breakdown of TASS 2012 Scholarship awards in 2005-06.
