Step into Sport
Step into Sport is one of the eight strands of the national School Sport strategy which is a joint initiative between Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Department for Education and Skills.
Step into Sport aims to provide a simple framework of opportunities for young people to experience sports leadership and volunteering in their local communities.
In the first phase of the project up to July 2004, Step into Sport supported:
- 39,000 students to take Junior Sports Leader Awards
- 24,000 students supporting 1700 festivals of sport for younger children in primary schools
- 29,000 students to take Community Sports
- Leader Awards; or other Sports Leadership Awards
- Over 1,000 youngsters taking National Governing Body awards
- Over 4,700 young people experiencing mentored volunteering in their communities
- All 45 County Sports Partnerships developing volunteer strategies
- 17 National Governing Bodies developing volunteer support strategies
