Women's Football
Football is the most popular female sport in England.
In the 2004/05 season, the number of women and girls participating in the sport reached the 130,000 mark. The total number of registered women players has now reached 60,000 mark.
The development of women's football is the responsibility of The Football Association (The FA). It is an integral part of The FA's 5 Year Football Development Strategy.
Grass roots football is currently benefiting from £45m worth of investment from The FA, Premier League and Government, through Sport England and the Football Foundation. DCMS is working closely with the Football Foundation and other sporting organisations to raise the profile of the women's game in this country.
Football is important to the Government. The sport is a key deliverer of its aims to increase participation in sport, improve social inclusion, community cohesion and the health of the nation.
Last year's UEFA Women's European Championships held in the North West of England was an excellent showcase event for women's football. Since then, the FA has been working to ensure that there is a lasting legacy in terms of encouraging women and young girls to become involved in the sport.
The Government will continue to work with the Football authorities in order to support the women's game at all levels.
