The UK successfully hosts a number of key major sporting events each year, for example, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, British Grand Prix and the cricket Test Series. These events are primarily organised and managed by the relevant sports bodies.
The Government-funded body, UK Sport, plays a key role in working with the sports National Governing Bodies on some major world events for specific sports, such as the successful World Indoor Athletic Championships held in Birmingham in March 2003.
Bidding to host this type of event is often competitive as it gives the host country the potential to boost the development of sport, win medals and international success and improve the image and influence of sport in this county worldwide.
We are also committed to supporting viable bids to host "mega" events in the UK. These are events such as the Olympic Games and Football's world cup.
