Funding sources for talented athletes
DCMS is regularly asked about sources of funding for talented athletes. In order to assist those who may be interested in applying, we describe below the main sources of funding and provide further contact details.
This information is not intended to be comprehensive. In the first instance, athletes should discuss funding options with their governing body as they are ideally placed to provide advice on the funding opportunities available in their sport.
Central Government does not provide funding directly to athletes, including support with educational fees. Athletes in full time education should contact their educational establishment directly with regard to potential available sources of funding.
SportsAid The charity SportsAid, provides direct financial assistance to young sportsmen and women, between the ages of 12 and 18, with proven ability so that they can meet the ever increasing and unavoidable cost of their sporting development. The organisation offers funding on a national and regional level where applications have been endorsed by the governing body of the sport concerned.
Gifted and Talented Programme The National School Sport Strategy covering 5-16 year olds has a Gifted and Talented (G&T) workstrand within it. The principle aim of the Gifted and Talented workstrand is to improve the identification of gifted and talented pupils in PE and school sport, and the support and provision available for them - for further information click on the website address above. The G&T workstrand within the National School Sport Strategy also contributes to the Government's wider national programme for gifted and talented education at local, regional and national level, which the DfES leads.
More information is available on Teachernet and Talentladder websites
Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) TASS Bursaries are for 16 to 19 year olds who are undertaking further education or have left education to pursue a career. TASS Scholarships are for 19 to 25 year olds who are undertaking higher of further education.
Additionally, for exceptional athletes, there is a TASS 2012 Scholarship strand of the scheme. Eligible athletes for this strand are those that have the potential to be medallists in the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
World Class Pathway Programme (WCPP) The UK's most promising and high performing athletes are supported through the World Class Pathway Programme (WCPP). UK Sport administers the programme, and works with the UK governing bodies to target public funding at the UK's top sportsmen and women - both able bodied and disabled - to help them achieve consistent success in top international competition and ultimately to bring home medals.
The Sports Funding Guide Information on potential sources of funding for individuals can be found in The Sports Funding Guide produced by the Directory of Social Change (DSC). The guide is priced £16.95 and also available in local libraries (ISBN 1 900360 49 7).
