Health and sport
Physical inactivity is a serious and increasing public health problem and is a significant factor in the increase in obesity.
Strong evidence confirms that there are many potential health benefits from being active, including a lower risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. Regular physical activity can have a beneficial effect on up to 20 chronic diseases or disorders.
To encourage people to be more active, Sport England have launched the Everyday Sport campaign.
Choosing health and activity
In March 2005, the Government published Choosing Activity: a physical activity action plan in support of the public health white paper, Delivering choosing health.
This presents a coordinated action plan for national and local government, public sector agencies, businesses, community groups and the public aimed at increasing physical activity levels across the whole population as a preventative health measure.
It brings together all the commitments relating to physical activity in Choosing Health, as well as other action across government, which will contribute to increasing levels of sport and physical activity. These include school PE and sport; local action to encourage activity through sport; transport plans; the use of green spaces; and through the NHS providing advice to individuals on increasing activity.
