Skills
To get the nation active it is crucial that we have the best trained and best qualified workforce possible. We need all sports sector employees to be highly skilled individuals whether they are a local cricket coach, a football ground steward or a leisure centre manager. Their expertise will be central to the drive to increase participation.
A number of organisations and initiatives around the country are already undertaking this crucial task.
SkillsActive The Government has given SkillsActive responsibility for leading this skills and productivity drive throughout the Active Leisure and Learning sector (which includes the sport and recreation, health and fitness, playwork, the outdoors and caravan industries).
SkillsActive is the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning. Sector Skills Councils are employer-led organisations, which together form the Skills for Business Network.
Examples of skills initiatives
The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) helps safeguard and promote the health and interests of people who use the services of exercise and fitness instructors, teachers and trainers. The Register uses a process of self-regulation that recognises industry-based qualifications, practical competency, and requires fitness professionals to work within a Code of Ethical Practice.
The Young Apprenticeship in Sport is being developed by the Department for Education and Skills and SkillsActive. It is a programme for 14 to 16 year olds and aims to combine practical and technical skills and work experience within the sports sector with broader learning and development.
The Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence is aimed at young people who have the potential to achieve excellence in their sport and are seeking to perform at the highest level as their main career goal.
