Headline findings and interim progress DSO1 baselines will be published in autumn 2010

The Taking Part survey collects data about engagement and non-engagement in culture, leisure and sport. The survey includes a child interview for those households containing at least one child aged 5 to 15. In 2008/09, 2,622 interviews were conducted with children in this age group.

The report begins by looking at the number of sectors in which children participate and the levels of participation within each sector. It then presents further detail and selected findings from the cultural and sporting sectors. It also looks at variations across a number of population sub groups.

The Department has a series of Departmental Strategic Objectives (DSOs). Within DSO1: Opportunity, two of the aims relate to child participation. These are:

  • Increasing the proportion of children and young people participating in culture
  • Increasing the proportion of children and young people participating in high quality PE and sport

The second part of the report presents baselines for the cultural and sporting offer for children and young people as part of these objectives. The measures that will be used to assess performance for these aims are outline in the technical note.

Interim progress will be assessed in autumn 2009 with the final assessment published in autumn 2010.
