DCMS Museum Peer Review Pilot - Reports and Self-Assessments

Sir Brian McMaster’s report "Supporting Excellence in the Arts: From Measurement to Judgement", published in January 2008, recommended the introduction of new systems of self-assessment and peer review for cultural institutions focused on judgement rather than measurement in order to encourage and reward excellence, innovation and risk-taking.

Following this recommendation the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has developed a system of self-assessment and peer review for its sponsored museums and has piloted this system at the National Portrait Gallery, Natural History Museum and Tyne & Wear Museums.

Published below are the completed self-assessments, the peer review reports and the management response from each of the three organisations.

The Department is now evaluating the results of the pilot and considering how best to roll out a system across all its NDPB museums.
