London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to benefit from London 2012

053/10
01 April 2010

The Olympic Board has agreed a special package of measures to help the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham receive maximum benefits from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

While Barking and Dagenham will not be hosting any Olympic and Paralympic events, the proximity of the borough to the Olympic Park site means that residents will still be involved with the Games on a daily basis. The Board has therefore decided a package of measures to help Barking and Dagenham take a full role in the development of the Games and its legacy.

Measures agreed include:

  • Membership of the East London Legacy Board – giving them a direct role in legacy planning in the future;

  • Access to Job Brokerage services for residents giving them 48 hours advance notice of jobs on the Olympic site helping to drive employment and economic opportunities in the borough;

  • An Adidas Adizone in Mayesbrook giving residents access to outdoor exercise equipment;

  • A cultural offer giving the borough a key role in the Cultural Olympiad in consultation with LOCOG;

  • Making Barking and Dagenham the preferred option to receive the relocatable shooting hall from the Woolwich Royal Artillery Barracks venue, which could become a permanent shooting facility for a number of local clubs and a multi-sport facility for community use; and

  • Working with LOCOG Ceremonies Team on an appropriate way for the Torch Relay to be celebrated in the borough.

Tessa Jowell, Minister for the Olympics, said:

“The London 2012 Olympics are already transforming East London but we want to ensure that the benefits spread as far and wide as possible. With the Olympics right on their doorstep it is only right that the people of Barking and Dagenham should be fully included in this opportunity, now and after 2012.”
