Arts Minister Announces Final Stages of UK Accession to UNESCO Convention on Illicit Cultural Trade
The final stages of formal UK accession to the UNESCO Convention on illicit trade in cultural property were announced today by Arts Minister Baroness Blackstone.
In answer to a House of Lords question from Lord Renfrew, Baroness Blackstone said:
" I am pleased to announce that the Convention has today been published as Command Paper 5500 and laid together with an Exploratory Memorandum. We hope to achieve our aim of acceding to the Convention by July. "
Notes to Editors
The 1970 UNESCO Convention gives members the right to recover stolen antiquities, primarily ancient and religious artefacts, which surface in the countries of fellow signatories. Accession will not have retroactive effect.
