Music promoter Vince Power today received an honorary Commander of the British Empire (CBE) from Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, for his valuable contribution to the music industry.
Mr Power opened his first music club, the original Mean Fiddler, in Harlesden, north-west London, in 1982. Playing host to new bands such as The Pogues, the club soon became extremely popular.
Mr Power took a 50 per cent stake in the Reading festival in 1989 and added to his Mean Fiddler roster with venues such as The Jazz Café and The Forum as well as several more festivals, including the London Fleadh and the Phoenix Festival. Mr Power retired as chairman of Mean Fiddler Music Group plc in 2004 and now owns the Vince Power Music Group.
Ms Jowell said:
“Mr Power has done a huge amount to raise the profile of live music in the UK. Through his work with music festivals and venues, his contribution has been fundamental in shaping the landscape of music in Britain today.”
On receiving the honour, Mr Power said:
“I am surprised and pleased to be given this honour. It’s been a long road, 25 years in the music industry. I hope I will continue to contribute to the British music industry in the years to come.”
