121/06
Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has today announced the appointment of Derek Mapp as the new Chair of Sport England.
Mr Mapp will bring extensive business and regional development experience to Sport England, as it works to encourage greater participation in community and grassroots sport in the run up to 2012, in particular through its regional sports boards.
Ms Jowell said:
"Sport England is all about getting more people taking part in sport. And about developing the club, coaches, volunteers and modern sporting facilities we need to get people involved.
“I am delighted therefore to announce Derek Mapp’s appointment as Chair of Sport England. Derek's strong entrepreneurial background and commitment to grassroots participation make him well equipped for this challenge. He will build on the legacy of Patrick Carter, who held the position with success and distinction for the past four years."
Mr Mapp’s appointment, made with the approval of the Prime Minister, will run from 2 October 2006 to 1 October 2010. Mr Mapp takes over from Lord Carter who held the position from 2002 - 2006.
Mr Mapp, said:
“I am very pleased to take up the position as Chair of Sport England. Getting more people involved in sport is hugely important – to people’s health, to increasing equality of opportunity to strengthening our communities. To be successful I believe that Sport England needs to be dynamic in its leadership. It also needs to ensure the inclusion of all interested parties – be they private, voluntary or public sector – in securing our objective.”
