£2 Million Cash Boost To 15 Museums and Galleries in the North of England and Midlands

102\04  Arts Minister Estelle Morris today announced the award of £1.9 million to fifteen museums and galleries in the North of England and the Midlands to help improve the quality of their displays, access for disabled visitors and environmental controls as part of the DCMS/Wolfson Museums & Galleries Improvement Fund 2004/05.

Among the museums to benefit are:

· National Museums Liverpool, which will receive £187,000 for improvements to Sudley House

· Tyne and Wear Museums, awarded £203,000 for refurbishment of five galleries at Monkwearmouth Station Museum

· Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, receiving £217,000 for redisplay of one of their galleries; and

· Hull Museums and Art Gallery, which gets £202,400 for gallery display and access improvements at Wilberforce House Museum

Estelle Morris said:

"I am very grateful to the Wolfson Foundation for their continued support for our Nation's museums and galleries.  This year, with a larger fund, their support will enable this programme to deliver wider benefits to an increased number of museums across the country."

"Our museums and galleries are a key educational resource, which draw in visitors locally, nationally and internationally.  They support community cohesion, the economy and most importantly instil a sense of creativity in all who visit them.  These grants will help museums and galleries, both large and small, across England to improve collection presentation and access, and by doing so, making them welcome to all."

Lord Wolfson said:

"The Trustees of the Wolfson Foundation are delighted to continue in partnership with the DCMS another year to provide further improvements for displays and renovation of exhibition spaces in national and regional museums and galleries."

These awards are part of a £4 million package from the DCMS and the Wolfson Foundation – further details concerning other regions will be announced shortly.
