Ships for the Nation
The consultation document below sets out a proposed policy framework for the preservation of historic ships. The document identifies key policy principles and proposals for a delivery mechanism. The aim of the policy is to help the maritime heritage to help itself by providing a beacon of excellence to encourage and facilitate a co-ordinated approach, assist those directly engaged in preservation, and promote public interest in historic ships.
The proposals underline the significance of historic ships as a heritage resource and draw attention to the benefits to local economies, tourism and education. The consultation paper invites views on the preservation of historic ships, on key issues identified in the development of the policy, and on proposals for an arm's-length mechanism for the delivery of that policy.
This consulation has now ended. The consulation period was 1 August - 31 October 2003.
