The consultation on the scope and implementation of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 in relation to sports coaches
The Department received twenty direct responses to this consultation. Of these, nine were from National Governing Bodies of sport; five from charities with an interest in sport and leisure; one from an independent researcher; one from a serving senior police officer; one from a County Sport Partnership; two Local Authority based responses; and one response from a member of the public.
One of these responses was from an umbrella organisation responding on behalf of 270 national governing bodies and representative bodies for sport and recreation. Another response was from a child protection agency which had received representation from 67 organisations.
The majority of responses received voiced support for the legislation to be extended to cover sports coaches. There was also a degree of reservation, that extension of the legislation is not required.
Update:
Following analysis of the consultation responses and follow-up meetings with the sports National Governing Bodies(NGBs) , the joint conclusion of DCMS and Home Officials was that there was insufficient evidence to extend the legislation to sports coaches. More information can be found on the Child Protection in Sport page.
The consultation period was 21 December 2004 to 21 March 2005.
