Sport
The Sports Councils, of which there are five (UK Sport, Sport England, Sport Scotland, the Sports Council of Northern Ireland and the Sports Council of Wales) are responsible for distributing National Lottery grants and Government Exchequer funding for sport.
Sport England
Sport England promotes and invests projects which increase participation in sport. It does this through two funding streams of National Lottery money - community and national.
Community investment
For Lottery grants of between £500 and £5000, applicants should apply to the Awards for All England programme.
National Investment
Sport England is investing £315 million of Lottery money through the national governing bodies of some 32 key sports and other key national partners. This investment is focussed on grassroots sport and encouraging participation. It is also focussed on developing a thriving infrastructure of clubs, coaches and volunteers.
Further information on Sport England Lottery funding can be found on their website, or by contacting Sport England directly by telephone on 08458 508 508 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm); or by e-mail at info@sportengland.org
UK Sport
UK Sport is responsible for high performance sport in the United Kingdom and supports world class athletes, world class events and ethically fair and drug free sport.
Through its World Class Performance Programme, UK Sport distributes Lottery funding in two ways:
grants to governing bodies of sport to invest in performance directors, coaches and sporting services;
personal grants to athletes themselves as a contribution to basic living costs, personal training and sports equipment costs.
Through its World Class Events Programme, UK Sport also supports the national governing bodies of sport to bid for and stage world class sporting events.
London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
On 6 July 2005, the London won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, having shown how London will offer a world-class stage to the world's greatest athletes.
The National Lottery will contribute to the public sector funding package for the Games.
We have published answers to some frequently asked questions about how it is proposed to fund an Olympic Games from the National Lottery; how this will impact on existing Lottery good causes; and the UK-wide benefits of staging the Games.
