Workforce development
We are working to set up the Culture and Creative Industries Sector Skills Council, which will replace the former Cultural Heritage National Training Organisation (CHNTO) in providing guidance on training for the sector. We also work closely with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) to develop policy on workforce and career development issues, including encouraging more diversity in the museum and gallery workforce, and issues around pay and skills development.
We recognise the need for improved leadership and management in the museums sector and is a regular participant in the National Museum Directors Conference's Leadership Working Party chaired by Roy Clare. DCMS and MLA have also contributed to the Clore Leadership Programme by funding a small number of fellows in the programme.
The role of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) We work closely with the MLA and have contributed, with other partners, to its 2004 Workforce Development Strategy. The Creative and Cultural Industries Sector Skills Council (CCI-SSC, which receives £100,000 funding from MLA) has indicated support for the objectives in the strategy, which is also reflected in the current regional Hub plans as part of the Renaissance programme. In addition MLA is active in the following areas of work: leadership, skills, workforce composition (including assistance with funding the Museums Association's "Diversify" project), research, and volunteers.
Encouraging diversity in the workforce The Museums Association's Diversify project aims to offer at least 50 positive action traineeships or bursaries by the end of 2006. The MA runs courses to assist with continuing professional development (CPD) and to help attain Associateship or Fellowship of the Museums Association (AMA or FMA). The MA can also offer careers advice.
Jobseeking? If you are interested in working in a museum or gallery, you may want to consider volunteering to build up experience as this is a very competitive area. Short, fixed term contracts are common and you will need to be flexible about moving around the country to advance your career. A number of post-graduate courses are offered in Museums Management should you wish to extend your qualifications. Most posts ask for a degree in a related subject area, work experience and possibly a postgraduate qualification.
The Museums Association advertises posts in the Museums Journal, produces a recruitment supplement and runs a programme of professional development for museums staff. The University of Leicester Department for Museums Studies offers a dedicated website for jobs in museums, heritage and archaeology. The Guardian advertises jobs in the sector in Monday and Wednesday editions, and its jobs website.
