Museums, Libraries and Archives Council
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council is a departmental sponsored body, formerly known as "Resource". It is the national development agency working for and on behalf of museums, libraries and archives and advising government on policy and priorities for the sector. It is chaired by Mark Wood, with a board of 14 members representing the three domains.
MLA's aims are to provide strategic leadership, to act as a powerful advocate for the three sectors, to develop capacity and to promote innovation and change.
MLA works closely with the Department on taking forward three key strategies:
- "Framework for the future"
The first ever national public library strategy, and an action plan aimed at delivering improvement across English library authorities
- "Renaissance in the regions"
A programme of investment focused principally on regional museums across England
- "Listening to the past, speaking to the future"
The Archives Task Force report
MLA delivers policy in the regions through the nine regional agencies for museums, libraries and archives. Programmes the regional agencies are currently delivering in addition to their day-to-day activities include a teacher-educator secondment programme and education projects complementing "Renaissance in the regions", both of which are being sponsored through the DCMS / DfES strategic commissioning programme.
