Resources for learning
Museums and galleries provide a rich resource for learning for all ages and levels of interest. We work closely with the Department for Education and Skills, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, the Group for Education in Museums, engage - the Association for Gallery Education and many other bodies to support learning provision in museums and galleries. We share the vision that everyone should have the chance to be able to learn from and enjoy the wonderful treasures that museums and galleries have to offer.
Government investment in museum and gallery education DCMS funds core education activities in our sponsored museums and galleries through their funding agreements. We are also continuing to invest in museum and gallery education across England in partnership with the Department for Education and Skills, building on the Museums and Galleries Education Programme run by DfES until March 2004, and the DCMS Museums and Galleries Education Challenge Fund, which ran from 1999-2001 and focussed on building capacity in local and regional museums.
To support the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council's Renaissance in the regions programme, DCMS and DfES are providing a £12.2 million stream of funding over 2003-06 to support regional "hub" museums in the nine regions in providing a comprehensive service to schools. Education Programme Delivery Plans have been produced by each region.
In April 2004, DCMS and DfES announced a joint investment of £7 million over 2004-06 to strengthen the capacity of museums and galleries to support children and young people's education. This investment includes :
- Continued support for the 12 DCMS-sponsored national museums and galleries and the British Library to work with regional museums and other partners on education projects
- Support for non-Renaissance museums, led by each regional Museum, Libraries and Archive Council, which complements work being delivered by the regional hubs
- A secondment programme for teachers and museum educators, delivered through the regional Museums, Libraries and Archives Councils
- Training for gallery educators, delivered through Arts Council England and engage
The University of Leicester conducted an evaluation of the 12 national / regional museum education partnership projects which took place in 2003-04.
