Royal Palaces

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) has been contracted by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to care for, preserve and present to the public the Unoccupied Royal Palaces. They comprise the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the State Apartments at Kensington Palace, the Banqueting House, Whitehall, and Kew Palace with Queen Charlotte's Cottage. Formerly an executive agency, HRP was established on 1 April 1998 by Royal Charter as a charitable trust.

In its first year of operation as a Non Departmental Public Body with charitable status no longer in receipt of public funding, HRP accrued a cash balance of £8.6 million. The Trust is actively engaged in progressing the Tower Environs Scheme at the Tower of London. The Scheme will transform the approaches to the Tower and subject to obtaining the necessary permission, work will start in early 2003.
