Our responsibilities cover the identification, conservation and enhancement of the historic built environment in England.
 
This includes listing and scheduling of historic buildings and ancient monuments; protection of conservation areas; management of the DCMS historic buildings estate together with State ceremonial duties. We also carry out European and International work on the historic environment including the selection and arrangements for care of World Heritage Sites under the World Heritage Convention.

In December 2001, together with the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions, we published The Historic Environment: A Force For Our Future. This is the first statement of Government policy on the historic environment for a generation and concluded a wide ranging policy review.  It sets out an ambitious vision which aims to unlock the full potential of our historic assets.  
 
We have set ourselves five specific tasks for achieving this:
  • Providing leadership
  • Realising educational potential
  • Including and involving people
  • Protecting and sustaining the historic environment
  • Optimising its economic potential

In the UK there are 58 designated wreck sites under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973.

There are currently some 500,000 listed buildings, 17,700 scheduled monuments and 8,500 conservation areas in England.

The UK currently has 26 World Heritage Sites of which 16 are in England, 4 in Scotland, 2 in Wales, 1 in Northern Ireland and 3 in overseas territories.

Since 1994, the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £3 billion to more than 15,000 projects across the UK.
